The Fireman’s Ball

There is a Light...

Got a light, pal?

You never know what you’ll find on eBay these days, it’s like going to the Salvation Army—could be dross or an unearthed gem. A recent series of random searches by a good friend brought up such a mystery: matchbooks purportedly by Saul Bass. A little research proved them to be authentic—comissioned for The Ohio Match Company circa 1964. Beyond reaching outside his milieu, the designs are classic 60’s but more in keeping with some of his contemporaries like Eames/Girard/Harper than his signature bold colors and organic but highly geometric shapes.
