John Peel, the late, legendary British DJ of pirate-radio fame, has had his 25,000+ record collection transformed into an online, interactive museum that showcases an eclectic tour through the history of modern music. As the longest-standing DJ of the original BBC Radio 1, Peel is often cited as one of the most influential and progressive DJs to ever grace the airwaves. The website also showcases photos, videos and live sessions, and will be unveiling the first 100 albums of each letter in the collection each week from May 1st – October 1st. (A, B and C have already been released.)

The website marks the latest creative attempt to connect the physical to the digital, a concept that’s at the forefront for a vinyl industry trying to survive in an increasingly digital world, where instant (and mobile) gratification is king. Playback for the albums links to various streaming sites like Spotify, which bridges the generational gap and connects albums from as early as the 1950s to the Internet’s most recent musical hub.

As someone who still clings to his turntable with aspirations of becoming a vinyl snob, here’s hoping that creative ventures like these, along with free digital downloads and cheeky iPhone apps, is enough to keep my growing vinyl collection more relevant than my HD DVDs.

How to #MakeItCount: Travel the World on Company Dime

The newest viral video to take over the interwebs comes courtesy of filmmaker Casey Neistat, who was given an advance from Nike to create his own video interpretation of the recently launched Nike+ Fuelband and the corresponding tagline “Life Is a Sport, Make It Count.”

Neistat’s vision (which supposedly came as a surprise to Nike) was to use the advance to travel the world until the funds ran out, packing a lifetime’s worth of adventure into a 10-day expedition. The result is an inspiring 4.5-minute video journey across the globe, complete with motivational quotes from historical figures (and one of my favorites from Dr. Gonzo/Hunter S. himself).

While Neistat starts off the video with a cynical tone (“instead of making their movie…”), the end result is a viral phenomenon that perfectly aligns with Nike’s Make It Count slogan. The beauty of this video is in its subtlety; other than a quick unveiling of the Nike+ Fuelband at the beginning of the video, there are hardly any further references to the product or Nike brand. Instead, we’re immersed in a lifestyle that we all wish we could live, prompting feelings of envy for its creator.  Just think what you could have done with the time you’ve spent reading this verbose blog post….

While some will certainly argue that it’s much easier to “Make It Count” if someone else is footing the bill, the message remains the same whether referring to world travel, our relationships with each other, or, in Nike’s case, physical activity.

That said, if someone wants to pay for my trip around the world, I’ll be happy to make it count.

Your move, MKTG.

TAXI!

without comments

karl lagerfeld!

Cab fares have really been going up these days – thanks to street artist The Tailor. The New York-based artist has added some flair to the fare stickers seen on taxi exteriors by adorning their plain stick-figure decals with iconic, easily recognizable clothes and accoutrements. Everyone from Moses to Mister T are now onboard.

The most biggest thing you never heard of ever before

with one comment

Five years ago, my house was filled with the helium-fueled screech of some kid on YouTube. It was Fred. Just a 9 year-old with his “alcoholic” mom’s cam and his finger on the warp-voice-to-chipmunk button. My kids thought he was brilliant.

I sat through about 20 of his YouTube videos. 1 was cute, 2 was enough and 3, was ice picks through my ears brings sweet relief. Despite me, Fred became a huge hit, and bigger news, after 5 years he still is. His top vid scored 38,000,000 hits, he’s #2 all-time YouTube-subscribed and he got a hugely advertised guest spot on Nickelodeon’s highest rated show, iCarly. He’s got a freaking iPhone app.

So keep an eye on Fred. He could end up ruling the world. Or he could wind up on the cover of OK! after forfeiting a $30 trillion P&G contract when he gets caught running a string of meth labs across the corn belt. Can’t wait to find out.

chewbacca-feeding-a-squirrelIn a recent study conducted by top industry experts, (and by that we mean two interns hopped up on Mountain Dew and leftover Halloween candy), it was confirmed that the amount of Chewbacca Americans receive on a daily basis is low to quite low. Some recieve little to no Chewbacca at all – a leading  cause of Chewie debt. Luckily the fine folks at instantchewbacca.com have clearly said enough’s enough as they bravely combat this epedemic. Kudos fine sirs and arrrarroowwrrerr!

Who is the Bunny Bandit?

with one comment

Over the last couple months bunny bandits have been popping up all over the East Village begging the question: WTF? Is it friend? Enemy? Frienemy? Who is this masked hare and what does it all mean?

We finally turned to the all powerful knowledge of the information superweb to discover that the rabbit in question is in fact… Bunny Bin Laden (cue the sad trombone.)

We get the whole bomb = graffiti thing, but we were hoping for something that didn’t suck slightly more clever.
