Brands Should Be ‘Fearless’ In Sponsorship Marketing

with one comment

Brands with smaller budgets need to be “fearless” when it comes to sponsorship marketing, Colin O’Toole, marketing manager for the Cadbury Premier League Partnership, has said.

He added that businesses also need to put their trust in the agencies they work with and make sure they are fully behind the strategy.

O’Toole was speaking on a panel held by MKTG today called The experience economy: driving business value through sponsorship and shared experiences.

He said: “We have a lot of smaller brands and they don’t have the budget that Cadbury has [such as Green & Blacks]. You need to focus on what you are trying to do, so on one metric and [be brilliant on that].

“Be fearless about what you’re trying to do. If you don’t take a risk you’re going to get lost, but there’s a fine line between fearlessness and stupidity. You’ve got to trust agencies that they will do their job and give you the best advice and then you have to back them.”

O’Toole explained that the campaigns that Cadbury’s has been able to deliver successfully are ones that the brand has “pushed the boat out a little” but has remained within its values.

Head of US Digital, Gavin Blawie, Speaks at Advertising Week New York

with one comment

Yesterday, on the final day of a very busy Advertising Week in New York City, our very own Gavin Blawie (Head of US Digital) participated in a panel entitled, The Power of the Fan: How to Win Them (& Their Friends).  In front of a packed audience at the Liberty Theatre in Times Square, Gavin joined Nicholas Carlson (Editor in Chief at Business Insider’s popular channel: Insider), Jeff Gregor (CMO and Chief Catalyst Officer at TNT & tbs), Walker Jacobs (Chief Operating Officer at FANDOM), and Christopher Vollmer (Global Entertainment and Media Advisory Leader at PwC) in a discussion about how to engage sports fans in a true, honest way.

Gavin shared with us his three takeaways from the panel including:

“In a social era, fans are the cornerstone of every modern marketing effort, for they converse and share in communities self organized around what they care about most.

“Whether it’s lifestyle or digital, all smart brand marketers connect and amplify on social through fans. It works because people believe people, and a fan can help convert non-fans faster and cheaper than brands can.”

“Smart marketers need to build on organic fan conversations, and complement them through the lens of making the fan experience better, richer, and more sharable”

Gavin received great feedback including this from the organizer: “Gavin, you added a ton to the conversation. I know Nicholas was really grateful!” For those of us in the audience, we can surely vouch for that! If you’d like to view the entire panel, it’s been posted here.

IBM’s Tony Awards Watch Party

with one comment

They say the lights are bright on Broadway and last month, the third annual Official Tony Awards Watch Party presented by IBM was the brightest star.

80 guests joined IBM for this buzz-worthy event, of which 35 were unpaid social influencers from theater, sports, and technology. Influencers included renowned actors and actresses and contributors to Playbill, Teen Vogue, and Essence Magazine. Check out some of their coverage here.

In 2014, MKTG identified a lack of attribution and conversation surrounding IBM’s partnership with the Tony Awards, during a social conversation audit utilizing proprietary listening tools. To combat this, MKTG developed a hosted viewing event for relevant voices in the theater, tech, and sports community to come together on Broadways biggest night. Since debuting in 2015, the IBM Watch Party has seen tremendous growth and fulfilled its goal of creating a common Tony Awards viewing experience and digital space for theatre aficionados to share in the excitement of the Awards while connecting back to IBM.

The event was revamped this year to continue to raise the bar of VIP influencer events and to creatively drive social conversations and real-life interaction between influencers and IBM. MKTG choreographed a series of unique content opportunities that showcased IBM’s Watson technology in relatable ways, from Chef Watson inspired drinks and chocolates to the infamous Watson Beat platform. 2017’s #WATCHPARTYIBM saw a 38% increase in social conversations and over 34 million potential impressions – this is doubled from 2016. Bravo team!

Last week, Smirnoff officially launched their Limited-Edition No. 21 Vodka “Love Winsbottle in their continued support of the LGBTQ community. No two bottles are identical as they each feature a unique rainbow color aesthetic as well as various polaroid images of real couples on every bottle created and photographed by San Francisco-based photographer Sarah Deragon.

The launch was held at the iconic Stonewall Inn NYC, a national historic landmark site that launched the riots and modern LGBT rights movement. MKTG had the supreme pleasure of being at the forefront of transforming the iconic venue, elevating the look and feel of the space and executing the “Smirnoff Love Wins Launch Party.” The launch party also included several major media and social influencers such as Girl With No Job, Bachelorette Caila Quinn and several more.

PGA Championship 2016: Recap

with one comment

Jordan Spieth signing autographs for fans on the last day of practice rounds which also happened to be his 23rd Birthday.

Jordan Spieth signing autographs for fans on the last day of practice rounds, which also happened to be his 23rd Birthday.

From July 25-31, MKTG hosted dozens of our clients and partners at the 2016 PGA Championship in our private VIP hospitality suite within the historic Club House at Baltusrol. Despite the hot and humid forecast, we all had a blast traversing the course catching some world-class golf.

We also all witnessed history as Jimmy Walker took home his first major title finishing -14 and holding on to the lead the entire time. Walker became the first wire-to-wire winner of the PGA Championship since Phil Mickelson, who won at Baltusrol in 2005. In fact, all four majors this year were won by first-timers including Masters champion Danny Willett; Dustin Johnson, who won the United States Open; and Henrik Stenson, the British Open champ. Walker had missed the cut in his last two majors, never finished higher than tied for seventh at any major and was perhaps best known on the PGA Tour for his unusual hobby: astrophotography, according to the New York Times.

In addition to witnessing Walker’s triumph, we saw reigning PGA Champion Jason Day, the world’s top ranked golfer, make the final holes crazy intense on Sunday , and even got up close and personal with stars like Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, John Daly, among others. Check out our snaps below and on Instagram and Snapchat.

Captain Morgan: Let Millennials Run For President

Maybe the country wouldn’t be stuck with deciding between Clinton or Trump if those younger than 35 were eligible to run for office. Now, Captain Morgan is petitioning the U.S. government to allow those under 35 to become president as part of its new campaign.captmorgan

There are multiple agency partners working on the #Under35POTUS campaign, among them: Taylor Strategy serves as lead creative agency, MKTG for experiential, VaynerMedia for social strategy, Carat for media and Starpower for influencer engagement.

The project centers around the Under35Potus.com website where those over age 21 are encouraged to sign the petition to change Article II, Section I of the United States Constitution, which restricts those under the age of 35 from becoming president. If 100,000 signatures have been acquired by August 17, 2016, the White House will review the petition, distribute it to appropriate policy officials and issue a response. They have a long way to go. As of press time, only 464 signatures have been submitted.

To help raise awareness, Captain Morgan is introducing a campaign video featuring influential and notable Under 35s who are making an impact and changing the world in their own right – including Mogul’s Tiffany Pham, JASH’s Mickey Meyer, Thrillist’s Ben Lerer and Thinkful’s Dan Friedman. Their achievements are shown during the uplifting song “We Are Young” by Fun.

Captain Morgan also penned an open letter that appeared in the New York Times on July 19 calling on everyone to join the cause and sign the petition.

From now through November 8th, the #Under35Potus movement will also be supported by digital, social, PR/Influencer and experiential marketing efforts as well as a robust media buy across platforms like You Tube, Tinder, Buzzfeed, Snapchat, and ESPN.com.

“It’s no secret that Millennials have gradually been disengaging from the political process.  The fact that there are very few elected Under 35s on Capitol Hill is symbolic of this disengagement, and bringing more young adults into the democratic system can only make our nation better,” stated Adrienne Cuschieri Grooms, senior brand manager, Captain Morgan.  “It’s not like we’re trying to create change for the sake of change.  This is a very real and important issue.  Millennials make up some of the most progressive, innovative, intelligent, and successful people in our country – why shouldn’t they be able to be President of the United States?”

More than half (52%) of 21-34 year olds say lowering the presidential age requirement would be beneficial for the country, and a clear majority of those polled – 56% – say they would be willing to act on this idea by supporting an amendment to lower the age requirement.
