IBM’s Tony Awards Watch Party

with one comment

They say the lights are bright on Broadway and last month, the third annual Official Tony Awards Watch Party presented by IBM was the brightest star.

80 guests joined IBM for this buzz-worthy event, of which 35 were unpaid social influencers from theater, sports, and technology. Influencers included renowned actors and actresses and contributors to Playbill, Teen Vogue, and Essence Magazine. Check out some of their coverage here.

In 2014, MKTG identified a lack of attribution and conversation surrounding IBM’s partnership with the Tony Awards, during a social conversation audit utilizing proprietary listening tools. To combat this, MKTG developed a hosted viewing event for relevant voices in the theater, tech, and sports community to come together on Broadways biggest night. Since debuting in 2015, the IBM Watch Party has seen tremendous growth and fulfilled its goal of creating a common Tony Awards viewing experience and digital space for theatre aficionados to share in the excitement of the Awards while connecting back to IBM.

The event was revamped this year to continue to raise the bar of VIP influencer events and to creatively drive social conversations and real-life interaction between influencers and IBM. MKTG choreographed a series of unique content opportunities that showcased IBM’s Watson technology in relatable ways, from Chef Watson inspired drinks and chocolates to the infamous Watson Beat platform. 2017’s #WATCHPARTYIBM saw a 38% increase in social conversations and over 34 million potential impressions – this is doubled from 2016. Bravo team!

Smirnoff House: The Party Is Just Getting Started

with one comment

 FotorCreated
MKTG has already brought some serious Smirnoff House party vibes to the Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas & HARD Summer this year- and we’re just getting started.  The House’s intimate stage puts you only a fist bump away from your favorite headlining DJs, many of whom just finished playing in front of 70,000+ crowds at a main stage.DJs in our House use this platform to transcend typical genre boundaries playing their favorite floor-shaking sounds (it literally shakes!) and pairing up with other top artists B2B (that’s back-to-back, for all you EDM newbies) to create a special moment for their fans. You never know who will show up to crash this House party until they’re behind the decks (sometimes we don’t even know)!

Smirnoff House will be throwing it down again at Nocturnal Wonderland during Labor Day Weekend (9/2 – 9/4) and EDC Orlando (11/4 – 11/5) to round out 2016.  We are gearing up for an even more massive 2017 festival season, but in the meantime, be sure to check out some WTF moments.

If you can’t crash our party at a festival near you, don’t fret. Here are some of our FAVORITE SETS in their entirety to turn your desk, living room or wherever into your own Smirnoff House party!

MKTG was thrilled to manage three separate AT&T activations during Final Four Fan Fest, March Madness & Tip Off Tailgate over the past few weeks! Our AT&T activation at Final Four Fan Fest was a 4-day hoops fan fest at the George R Brown Convention Center. It was an awesome space that featured: appearances by basketball legends and current college coaches, the AT&T Pressure Point, a fully-immersive experience leveraging AT&T technology that puts you on the foul line with a chance to win the NCAA Championship, a relaxing space to charge your devices while watching DIRECTV, a Vine Studio to beef up your social media game at the Final Four and a hoops legend photo op inside an AT&T Connected Car, powered by in-vehicle wi-fi. Take a look at the photo journey below:

The March Madness Music Festival was a 3-day music festival at Discovery Green in Downtown Houston, TX. Friday night was AT&T’s entitlement night, called AT&T Block Party #attblockparty where Lukas Graham, Panic! At the Disco and Fall Out Boy performed and absolutely brought the house down!

There was a brand experience and lounge activation all three nights featuring super cool dome structures with great lighting effects, customized screen print t-shirts, a Vine Studio to beef up your social media game at the festival, watch VR footage of other music performances in the Samsung VR area, a relaxing space to charge your devices while watching DIRECTV, a 360-degree photo op, Tip Off Tailgate, a 3-day tailgate activation outside nrg Stadium, AT&T Charging Zone featuring valet and while-you-wait charging, along with live DIRECTV to watch pre-game coverage!

Guest Q&A: Joey Jalleo, Standard International, talks Met Ball, Bora Bora and Burberry

without comments

Schlappy

Joey Jalleo Photo by Jerome Jakubiec

For this month’s Guest Column, we sat down with Joey Jalleo, VP of Culture and Communication for Standard International, the parent company for The Standard Hotels in New York City, Los Angeles and Miami. Joey has been with The Standard for six years and following being part of the team that launched NY’s hottest hotel property, The Standard, High Line and its storied nightclubs, the Boom Boom Room and Le Bain, he now oversees all PR, programming, digital initiatives, special projects and culture for all five Standard-branded properties in the US. Joey joined after ten years working in PR/events for some of the world’s biggest luxury consumer brands. He brings his understanding of the events and media business, as well a passion for art, fashion, entertainment and design to his job every day, to ensure that his properties continue to be some of the most popular and highly-regarded in the world.

We caught Joey, bright eyed and bushy tailed, the morning after their annual Met Ball After Party at the Top of the Standard (aka The Boom Boom Room) in NYC.

Thanks for joining us today Joey!  We know that last night, you hosted one of the most popular events of the year on the NYC social calendar – the “unofficial” after party for the storied Met Ball. How did this begin and how did it go this year?

In May of 2010, I asked André [Balazs] if we could open the Boom Boom Room on a Monday night (a night we are normally closed) so that we could throw an informal after-party to the Met Gala uptown.  It’s NYC’s star-studded event of the year, but for us, it was meant to be casual…nothing too over-the-top; like a house party.  I reached out to our fashion designer and society friends, and invited a few of them down to the property post gala.  Before I knew what was happening, word had spread and the room was filled with all the uptown attendees who trekked from the Upper East Side to the Meatpacking District. That night was incredible and everyone had an amazing time and felt part of something special. That night laid the foundation for what was to be a momentous annual tradition for The Standard.

2015 was no exception.

MKTG did the research and learned (although Joey wouldn’t confirm, being the consummate professional that he is) that the following celebs attended the after party until the wee hours at The Top of the Standard: Katy Perry and John Mayer, Leonardo diCaprio, Bradley Cooper, P Diddy, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Reese Witherspoon, Kerry Washington, Jessica Alba, Allison Williams, Robert Pattinson and his fiancée FKA twigs, Chrissy Tiegen and John Legend, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Chase Crawford, Jennifer Connelly, Elizabeth Banks, Naomi Campbell, Matt Bomer, Mickey Rourke, Kate Mara, Emily Blunt, Gigi Hadid, Adriana Lima, Joshua Jackson, and of course, Standard founder, Andre Balazs and many others, including DJ Samantha Ronson who kept people dancing all night.

STANDARD NYCViews from The Standard High Line NYC

You attend a ton of events around the world. Where have you been most recently and what about the event do you remember most?

I love how digital has been woven into events, especially when it is done well. While in Los Angeles a couple of weeks back, I was very fortunate to be invited to Burberry’s London in Los Angeles fashion show and party. It was truly spectacular. They took over Griffith Observatory. Everyone was in attendance…the Beckham Family, Elton John, Cara Delevingne, Rose Byrne, Kate Beckinsale, Mila Kunis, Ryan Seacrest and Anna Wintour to name a few. Jourdan Dunn opened the show. Naomi Campbell closed. They flew in ten real guards from Buckingham Palace (First Battalion Grenadier Guards to be exact) to walk the runway post-show. As they got to the end of the catwalk, the massive Burberry walls opened up to reveal the after-party on top of the hill overlooking Los Angeles.  SPECTACULAR!!

Burberry-the-show-6-Vogue-17Apr15-pr_bAs the Grenadier Guards’ drums beat, the models and guests file out onto the lawn for the party.

Have you experienced something at an event recently, technology or programming-wise that blew your mind? Where was it and what was it?

At the same aforementioned Burberry event, they had the guards perform a “show” while an extensive video projected across the building’s facade featuring digitally reproduced guards parading across the building. Also, their invitation for the show and party arrived in video form. Impressive.

You’re quite the jet setter. What’s been the best trip/city place or places and why?

I am grateful for all of the amazing places I get to see as part of my job, and I travel quite often but mostly to our properties in LA and Miami, or to London. But a few weeks back, I traveled with my family to French Polynesia. Wow. We were there for ten days and started our trip on a small island an hour out from Tahiti call Huahine. The crystalline waters, the perfect weather, the fresh food. All incredible. Then we spent four days on a catamaran with a captain and chef where we toured the islands of Raiatea and Taha’a. The only way to end the trip was with two days in Bora Bora in over-the-water bungalows.  The lagoons were our private swimming pools, and I finally understood what heaven on earth meant.

What’s your personal mantra or quote you live by and why?

“Leap and the net will appear” because you can never take out an insurance policy on a risk with real return.

SXSW: It’s All About That Bass, ‘Bout That Bass (and Mobile, of course)

without comments

SXSW_2015_Family_CMYK-02

This year was my first time attending SXSW. While I had heard all of the stories about how huge and overwhelming it was getting, I have to admit that thanks to some stealth planning and relying on some key mobile apps, I came back to NCAA with a ton of knowledge under my belt…as well as a deep knowledge of what makes a great taco!

After hours of panels and networking and lots of talk of mobile marketing, integrated apps, and keeping it “all about the charge,” this year at SXSW proved that 2015 is once again a hot year for mobile marketing and digital integration into campaigns.

My take on mobile…agree or not, you must adapt. Now.
We know that mobile has become a hugely effective way to reach and engage consumers, whose average attention span registers at an all-time low of just seven seconds. A slight aside, but interesting nonetheless, did you know that up to 25% of consumers, especially the younger set, currently only access the Internet via their mobile devices?

OK, back to business.

Brands have turned the corner and are regularly optimizing their content to adapt to mobile viewing, and restructuring messaging to be concise, to-the-point. They know that once they enter the playing field of mobile marketing, they are seamlessly integrating into consumer’s everyday lives. Utilizing localized marketing, and leveraging data to provide content that is personalized and relevant in real time will make for a better mobile experience.

My favorite App of SX: SXSW GO
One of the most useful apps I downloaded and used was the “SXSW Go” app which displaced printed guides and helped conference goers organize their schedules, and navigate the ever-expanding footprint of events. Additional functions of the app included push notifications about big sessions and events, and a networking tool called SXSocial.

St Bernard Mophie Resue[1] copy

Mophie partnered with the St. Bernard Rescue Foundation and with a team of St. Bernards, set out across SXSW to “save” attendees from dying batteries.

Super smart SX activation: MOPHIE
One of the biggest pain points for SXSWers was battery drain, and this came up time and time again. Smart marketer Mophie marketed into this opportunity with the “Mophie Rescue Lodge.”  Consumers were encouraged to screenshot their low battery life and tweet it to the brand for the potential to have a Mophie rep, along with a beautiful St. Bernard, come to your location and charge your phone for free. People loved it.

In conclusion: In our business at MKTG INC, we have done really well in understanding how to extend our physical events prior to and beyond the actual event by integrating mobile and social into our activations. Clearly, we are on the right track and it’s only getting easier for us to do this at the great benefit of our clients.  I’m excited to be back at the office and sharing my learnings with my co-workers, but I must admit, the tacos in Austin are worlds better than what I can find here in NYC!

The Most Epic Vacation Ever Taken

with one comment

NZ 4

When deciding where in the world (literally) I wanted to go for my MKTG Rewards trip, I came up with a few ideals:

Must be one of the furthest countries possible

With a captivating history and super cool culture

That offers tons of adventuresome activity yet an abundance of untouched nature and breathtaking scenery

Where we can discover awesome food, drink some of the world’s best wine, meet the nicest people and have the opportunity to go to a legendary concert

And a beach…there’s gotta be a beach.

Surely these ridiculously high expectations could only be met in a fantasy country?! Or perhaps, a country that produced one of the most successful fantasy film series of all time…

Cue New Zealand.

After sharing my ambition with Marlena Edwards, she said, “Girl, if you’re going all the way to New Zealand you HAVE to go to Fiji!!”

Done. Beach

NZ 2

My boyfriend, Dave, and I started our journey in a very fitting way – we sat back, relaxed and watched The Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made on our Air New Zealand flight to Queenstown. Most MKTGers have had their fair share of airplane safety but this one is worth watching, despite the fact that at the end of the video you won’t take off for vacation.

After 22 long hours of travel we landed on the south island and made our way to an Airbnb apartment on the edge of a cliff, overlooking snowcapped mountains and turquoise-blue water. Our first activity included a visit to a cozy vineyard, a four-course lunch and A LOT of wine – perfect way to recover from jetlag. We explored Queenstown and hit the famed Fergburger, which nearly put us into food comas before jumping in our car for a road-trip.

Driving along the coast of New Zealand was one of my favorite parts of the trip. The country’s vistas were spectacular (it was hard not to drive off the road while being distracted by the beauty!) We made it to our kayak tour of Milford Sound, which is a fiord in the south island. Officially, a fiord is a long, narrow inlet with steep cliffs created by glacial erosion. Unofficially, it’s really cold(!) and one of the most remarkable sights I’ve ever experienced. With waterfalls, mountains and adorable little penguins, Dave and I were in awe as we kayaked through the area. After an overnight cruise, we hiked our way north and made the trek back towards Queenstown.

How did we top such an awesome adventure to end the Queenstown segment of the trip? Jump off a bridge, of course! Before we could change our minds, Dave and I found ourselves clipped into individual bungees on the Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge. 43 meters and a 4-second free-fall later (it felt like an eternity), we could say that we lived through the scariest adrenaline rush ever! The video still makes my stomach flip:

Auckland, on the north island, is the metropolitan area of New Zealand so after getting a taste of kiwi city life, we boarded a ferry and headed to the most popular holiday destination of locals, Waiheke Island. Here we zip-lined our way around the beautiful, warm environment and spent the remainder of the day exploring vineyards, known for their Bordeaux wine-type grapes.

The Coromandel Peninsula was the next stop on our itinerary. Dave and I took a boat to a bus to a beach where we discovered the Coromandel’s hot springs. Just a few feet from the chilly ocean water, we dug a large hole in the sand and relaxed in the thermal water. We continued on to Cathedral Cove for a hike down to a beach with phenomenal rock formations.

How did we top such thrills and gorgeous sights to end the Auckland segment of the trip? A Rolling Stones concert, of course! Dave and I were lucky enough to score tickets to The Stones’ last stop on their tour. It was an epic way to end our time spent in New Zealand.

Joanna Rewards

Thanks to Marlena’s advice, we were able to recover from the boats, hikes, bridges, drives and wine while laying on a white-sand beach at the Lomani Resort on the Mamanuca group of islands in Fiji. Snorkeling, paddle boarding and hammock-ing (with Pina Coladas) was how we spent these blissful days. The Fijian people are so welcoming and the serene atmosphere felt as if it were a dream.

So, how do we top the most epic vacation ever taken? Not sure it’s possible, but we are up for the challenge! Thank you, MKTG, for providing the best reward possible: an unforgettable experience.
