Seeing Chicago

The work of a great street photographer can give you a new view of a city – even if you have lived in that city your entire life. Robert Frank, William Eggleston and Henri Cartier Bresson are famous for giving us unique views of fleeting moments in New York, Mississippi and Paris.
Recently, a Chicago man came across a cardboard box full of undeveloped film at an estate sale. He is slowly developing the film and posting the images on a blog. His discovery is the work of Vivian Maier (1926-2009), a street photographer whose photographs of Chicago have never been seen until this year. Thanks to a chance discovery, we now have a new way to view Chicago.

Designers! Sit down: What you are about to read will make you dizzy with joy.
Have you ever wanted to create your own jewelry? Objects d’art? How about a lawn gnome that looks like you!? If you’ve always wanted to release your designy beast but never had the time, resources, or expertise in fabrication – well, here’s your new favorite website. The Shapeways website is the ultimate co-creation service and community. Here you can turn your ideas into fully fleshed items – usually within 10 days (item at your doorstop). The CEO of Shapeways (Peter Weijmarhausen) gave an amazing presentation at the PSFK Conference in New York last week. I was blown away and just had to share. To be clear – it was just was one of many exceptional design stories presented at the conference, many of which I will write about in this space. Oh, and you’re welcome.
Have a seat? I don’t mind if I do!
With the exception of the one with a scale, which seems sort of scary if you ask me, these bus stops are way cooler than the ones I frequent (perpetually-under-construction 96th Street, I’m talking to you).
