The beginning of the year starts with the best intentions. Maybe it’s your New Year’s resolutions to get in shape, start eating right or to run every day. Or it’s just a resolution to be better than you were last year. Whatever your resolution may be, as responsibilities pick up at work and at home, i.e. life happens, they become increasingly more difficult to keep.
The good news? There’s an app for everything! Even your New Year’s Resolution and especially self-care. And we have some tried-and-true recommendations to help with any goal you may have to make 2017 your BEST year yet.
Get In Shape
The Nike+ Training App has workouts from beginner to advanced levels. You can set reminders to workout, start your own workout program, and even download workouts so you can complete them without using your data. The Nike+ Training App rarely requires equipment (though it offers modifications if you’d like to use equipment), which makes it a great tool for anyone who spends a lot of time on the road. Just download the app, pack your training shoes and get a sweat in no matter where you are.
Run Every Day
The Nike+ Run Club App is the all-in-one tool for beginners to advanced runners alike. The app tracks your miles, your splits and your progress over time. You can also set up a Nike+ Coach plan to help keep you on track to your goals. Plus, there will always be an elite athlete congratulating you for getting out there…and they can be quite motivating!
Get Involved/Take Action
Countable is your one-stop-shop for everything US politics. It notifies you of bills under consideration, explains them in a lay-person’s terms, and gives you the opportunity to vote yea or nay (which is then sent directly to your rep). Countable makes it easy to get involved, no matter your party affiliation.
Fabulous is an app made in partnership with the Duke School of Behavioral Economics to help you build healthy habits. It starts small, like “drink water as soon as you wake up for three days in a row.” And progresses to include tips on eating healthy breakfast and to exercise and even offers tips on mental habits and meditation. It can be a bit overwhelming at first, but at the end of the day, having a lot of small habits adds up to feeling happier, healthier, and more energized.
BreakFree is the app we all know we need and only sort-of want. The app works to analyze how addicted you truly are to your smartphone and assist you in cutting down phone-usage. You can set new guard rails for yourself, and the app will notify you in real-time if you aren’t meeting those expectations (i.e. if you’ve been on the phone too long without a break). Users say it’s a hugely humbling experience, and helps get you to think twice before picking up that small block. Maybe the Instagram feed can wait a bit.
Meditation can be an intimidating practice, especially if you’re always on the move, both physically and mentally. Headspace is an app to help reduce stress and anxiety through a series of guided meditation, for beginners to gurus. The free version comes with one level of meditation and you can download the app with a free 10-day trial before committing to a subscription for a large collection of guided meditations. OHMMMMMMMMM……
MKTG’s “A Day in the Life” series has spanned the US talking to our amazing colleagues. In this profile, we circle back to MKTG HQ in New York City and chat with native New Yorker Heikal Aliakber. Heikal works in Client Services on the R.J. Reynolds account, managing four mobile tours that conduct consumer engagement activity at music festivals, bars, clubs and retail locations. His days are full on- involving everything from working with major promoters to source/contract events, routing Brand Ambassadors to different locations based on strategic needs and managing on-site at client activations – from communications, creative ideation and sometimes rolling up his sleeves and hitting things with sledgehammers (seriously).
When back home in NYC, Heikel maneuvers his hometown with a nonplussed sense of know-how only true New Yorker’s can encompass – a skill that tourists must definitely gaze at with wonderment.
MKTG: What time do you wake up on a typical work day?
HA: This is highly dependent on where I’m waking up.
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up? Do you have a routine?
HA: I’m the world’s worst morning person. Seriously. I could go to bed the following night, knowing that the next day will be the best day in recorded history, and I will still wake up and shake my fist in the air while yelling incoherently (like Grandpa Simpson). I feel like my brain doesn’t wake up until about 10AM, and that only happens if I do the following:
1) put food in my stomach prior to trying to actually get things done
2) shower (which may or may not serve as a platform for me to warm up my vocal cords so that I don’t grunt on the first few phone calls of the day
3) catch up on current events and anything that transpired over the period of time I was asleep. In our business, knowledge is power (but also, FOMO is real).
Your day cannot be properly started without ______…
HA: A huge bowl of oatmeal.
How do you commute to work, and do you enjoy your commute? Details please!
HA: I was born and raised in Queens, so dealing with NYC public transit isn’t anything new to me. I’m constantly traveling between Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island (where my fiancée currently lives), so suffice it to say, commuting is a major part of my life. Whether I enjoy it or not depends on the characters I meet. The dude who blasts relaxing string quartet music through a boombox on the Staten Island ferry, while doing his morning yoga routine? I’m cool with that. The dude that carries two live, noisy chickens in a puppy crate onto the E train at rush hour, while man-spreading against the pole that I’m trying to cling to? NOPE.
Does your day have a soundtrack? If so, what’s on your playlist that is a daily obsession or gives you that stroke of genius?
HA: My typical day oscillates between rap, reggae, international music, heavy metal, movie scores and slow jams. My current obsessions? “Amazing” – Spit Syndicate (Australian rap group), “Picture Perfect” – Culture Shock (hip hop/bhangra group), “No Leaf Clover” – Metallica, “Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst” – Kendrick Lamar, “Made You Look (Remix)” – Nas ft. Ludacris and “Time” – Hans Zimmer.
Do you listen to podcasts? If so, which ones?
HA: Anything NPR-related I find to be gold. But I also enjoy listening to The Joe Rogan Experience, and Anna Faris is Unqualified is charming.
Name your top five apps and why.
1) Venmo – because I’m always leaving my wallet somewhere
2) Delta – checking in early is a nervous tick of mine
3) Netflix – because I hate doing cardio, and watching new series “The Get Down” while slaving away on a
treadmill is the only thing getting me through it currently
4) Spotify – perfect for tuning out the chicken-carrying denizens of the NYC public transit system
5) News – to get my daily dose of what’s real in this world
What are some restaurants or spots near your office that make your day- from a lunch place that knows your ‘usual’ to a beautiful park- what locales do you live by?
HA: The fish tacos at Belle Reve are fantastic. But, I’m a Queens kid at heart, so most of the places I know aren’t local to the office, and are more often than not hole-in-the-wall establishments.
What after-work activity makes your week complete?
HA: I like picking heavy things up and putting them back down.

This year was my first time attending SXSW. While I had heard all of the stories about how huge and overwhelming it was getting, I have to admit that thanks to some stealth planning and relying on some key mobile apps, I came back to NCAA with a ton of knowledge under my belt…as well as a deep knowledge of what makes a great taco!
After hours of panels and networking and lots of talk of mobile marketing, integrated apps, and keeping it “all about the charge,” this year at SXSW proved that 2015 is once again a hot year for mobile marketing and digital integration into campaigns.
My take on mobile…agree or not, you must adapt. Now.
We know that mobile has become a hugely effective way to reach and engage consumers, whose average attention span registers at an all-time low of just seven seconds. A slight aside, but interesting nonetheless, did you know that up to 25% of consumers, especially the younger set, currently only access the Internet via their mobile devices?
OK, back to business.
Brands have turned the corner and are regularly optimizing their content to adapt to mobile viewing, and restructuring messaging to be concise, to-the-point. They know that once they enter the playing field of mobile marketing, they are seamlessly integrating into consumer’s everyday lives. Utilizing localized marketing, and leveraging data to provide content that is personalized and relevant in real time will make for a better mobile experience.
My favorite App of SX: SXSW GO
One of the most useful apps I downloaded and used was the “SXSW Go” app which displaced printed guides and helped conference goers organize their schedules, and navigate the ever-expanding footprint of events. Additional functions of the app included push notifications about big sessions and events, and a networking tool called SXSocial.
Super smart SX activation: MOPHIE
One of the biggest pain points for SXSWers was battery drain, and this came up time and time again. Smart marketer Mophie marketed into this opportunity with the “Mophie Rescue Lodge.” Consumers were encouraged to screenshot their low battery life and tweet it to the brand for the potential to have a Mophie rep, along with a beautiful St. Bernard, come to your location and charge your phone for free. People loved it.
In conclusion: In our business at MKTG INC, we have done really well in understanding how to extend our physical events prior to and beyond the actual event by integrating mobile and social into our activations. Clearly, we are on the right track and it’s only getting easier for us to do this at the great benefit of our clients. I’m excited to be back at the office and sharing my learnings with my co-workers, but I must admit, the tacos in Austin are worlds better than what I can find here in NYC!

It seems like every time I go to an event, all the photos of my group end up split up across 4+ people’s phones. It’s either a chore to have my friends tag, email or text them to the group or more likely, none of them see the light of day. Until now.
The guys behind Bump have developed a new app that’s designed to fix this common dilemma. Flock collects photos from you and friends you were with into privately shared albums. As TechCrunch noted, “Flock for iOS combines brilliant social design with the underutilized photo location API to simplify sharing. Instead of clumsily selecting privacy settings, it suggests you share with any of your Facebook friends who use Flock and also took photos at the same time and place.”
There are several great things about this app. First, it enables you to take photos and deal with them later. Unlike Facebook or Instagram, you take the photo, continue enjoying whatever you’re doing and then you receive a push notification reminder to share your photos after you’ve left the geo-fenced location. Additionally, it shifts the photo sharing process from selection to omission, because it automatically selects all your photos from an event and then you can unselect the ones that you don’t want to share. Finally, this could (potentially) put an end to all those irrelevant photo albums of random trips taken by people you barely remember from high school that constantly fill your news feed on Facebook. Now they can just share the albums on Flock with a few select people who were actually on the trip and want to see the photos.
In today’s world of digital sharing (and over-sharing), we could all benefit from a bit of a bit of moderation and it seems like Flock is starting to head us in the right direction…
Maybe it’s because texting can be annoying, especially when I’m multitasking or when I have my hands full. Or maybe it’s because I still miss my 2002 Nextel phone (there was nothing cooler than that chirping sound and you know it). Whatever the reason, I’m loving the Voxer Walkie Talkie app. It turns your smartphone into a smart walkie-talkie, so you can use it to bypass your friend’s rings and voicemail greetings and basically go straight to leaving a message. I use it when I’m meeting with people — it’s so much easier than texting my coordinates or calling and having an entire conversation about where I’m at. And one of Voxer’s coolest features is the group chat. With one touch of a button, you can send an audio, picture, location or text message to a whole group of friends. And since it’s integrated with Facebook, that group can even be a group of Facebook friends.
This last feature makes Voxer a tool that could be of great use at agencies such as ours. Imagine the convenience of sending out a quick audio message to your entire team of Brand Ambassadors and Managers. You can reach your whole group while you’re on the go — which I’m betting you often are. Plus, there’s an added bonus: It’s fun to use!
Voxer Walkie Talkie is free, and available in both the Android Market and the App Store, so everyone can play.
