Guinness ICC 2014: Soccer, Smirnoff Ice and Setting Records

with 2 comments

With the excitement of a thrilling World Cup still in the air, soccer fans across the US had little time to catch their breath as the largest soccer tournament in America was upon them. For the second year in a row, Guinness was the title sponsor of the International Champions Cup (ICC), a two-week tournament pitting some of the best soccer clubs from around the world against one another right here in the United States. This year, Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid sought to defend their 2013 title against Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, FC Inter, AC Milan, AS Roma and Olympiacos.

The tournament spanned 12 US cities, drawing in over 640,000 passionate fans to the stadiums and exponentially more through live broadcasting on NBC Sports, Fox Sports 1 and Fox Network Television. The ICC made its presence known, appearing several times on ESPN’s Top 10 plays (including Wayne Rooney’s awesome goal in the final match). Most impressive, perhaps, was the Manchester United vs Real Madrid match in Ann Arbor, Michigan where 109,318 fans filled “The Big House,” accounting for the largest crowd to ever watch a professional soccer game in the US. The irony of Guinness setting a record is not lost here.

All ICC stadium events featured a Guinness Beer Garden providing avid fans with cold beer, giveaways and MKTG INC staff. MKTG INC also executed 161 events at designated local Fan Hubs across the ICC cities, where consumers competed in prop pick contests to win premium Guinness soccer swag and received complimentary beer samples. These events coincided with televised ICC matches and drew even more viewers for the tournament.

MKTG INC also managed the sampling of portfolio-partner Smirnoff Ice at the Dallas and Miami events. Over 2,400 consumers (21+) sampled Smirnoff Ice Original, Screwdriver and Watermelon Mimosa across these two events. Many had never tasted the brand before but eagerly welcomed the ice cold product on those blistering hot days. Both Guinness and Smirnoff Ice saw impressive sales at the stadiums, further establishing them as drinks of choice when watching soccer.

In the end, Manchester United faced off against its heated rival Liverpool in front of a roaring crowd of over 50,000 fans in Miami. After a slow start, Wayne Rooney and his Manchester United team rallied an exciting comeback to win 3-1, claiming the 2014 International Champions Cup as their own. Once again, Guinness treated fans to some of the best soccer the world has to offer right in their own backyards. While it may have only been considered a friendly, the passion, records and bragging rights are certainly real.

Winning the Barclays Premier League Trophy is a HUGE achievement, winning 20…well that is INCREDIBLE!  In 2013 global football powerhouse Manchester United did just that and claimed their 20th Premier League Trophy.  The Red Devils have one of the largest fan bases in all of sports, and what better way to say thank you than to share the trophy with all of them.  Manchester United partnered with MKTG INC to travel the world with the Premier League Trophy to say thanks to fans, partners and supporters that were a part of the historical season.

MKTG traveled all over the world to put the Trophy Wall and Museum structures together.  Working closely with the local venues and partners throughout the tour to create a consumer experience like no other.  The tour has spanned over 152 days, traveled 96,000km and visited 31 cities in 24 countries across 4 continents.  Fans and partners in local markets got the opportunity to come out and meet Manchester United Legends and have their photo taken with the trophy.  Fans also got the opportunity to explore the Story Wall Museum taking them down memory lane through Manchester United’s history.  Showcasing artifacts from previous eras and allowing fans young and old to get an up close and personal look into the historical club.

The celebration might be coming to an end but the support for the Reds will carry on…Glory Glory Man United!

MKTG INC LDN Sets Up in a Pub

without comments

2013 was a big year for MKTG INC London – new faces, new business, and a new office space. We’re now very excited for what 2014 has in store.

Here are some highlights of what’s going on across the pond:

It’s only fitting that the London team kLondon Officeeep true to the British spirit by setting up camp in what was once a pub – The Jolly Coopers.

Nestled on the corner of a cobbled street and surrounded by some of the oldest buildings in London, MKTG INC LDN is pretty serious about this whole old English charm thing. There’s still some work to be done to make it home sweet home, but we are definitely settling nicely into our new office!

Along with our new digs, there are a lot of new and exciting opportunities happening for the London team at the moment.

In November, we set out with one of the world’s biggest Football (Soccer) Clubs, Manchester United, on the a 6-month global Trophy Tour. MKTG INC will cross 4 continents, traveling 96,000 km to 31 cities with a super smart, portable museum showcasing the Premier League trophy and club artifacts.

Hong Kong's Cutest Fan

So far the team has hit Santiago, Chile and Mexico City as well as the recent Asian leg of the tour, which finished in Hong Kong. Coming up in mid-January, India is next!

Last month, we wrapped up the year with our Lumberjack themed holiday party and got to spend some quality team bonding time over a couple games of Moosical Logs. I’m telling you, nothing brings great minds together like a campfire sing-a-long. While that statement might not be 100% true, I can say without a doubt that the MKTG INC London team could not be more excited for what is to come in 2014.
