Full Moon Music Festival Countdown

A Day in the Life: Karina Munoz, MKTG NY

For the past 3.5 years, Karina Munoz has been living in NYC as a Diageo Account Director at MKTG NY. A Sydney native, Karina misses such after work perks like being able to jump into the sea (jealous!), but does not miss most things closing at 6pm. Clearly, convenience is king for Karina and since Manhattan has become her home for the moment, she’s not sure she’ll be able to revert back to her Sydney ways.

A Diageo veteran, Karina has been working for the brand over the past eight years both here and in Australia. Currently she oversees a number of the Diageo brands – Smirnoff, Bulleit, George Dickel, North American Whiskies, Naked Turtle (the list goes on!). As a Diageo global veteran, Karina feels gratitude for the high volume of travel she’s clocked in and has completed more Diageo Marketing Code courses than she can keep track of!

As common with many ex-pats, when the quintessentially American holiday Thanksgiving looms, Karina has found herself doing a “Friendsgiving” with her Aussie mates. However, this year she was adopted by her boyfriend’s family and had her first official American Thanksgiving. In true tradition, Karina brought the pie- a festive rite of passage!

MKTG: What time do you wake up on a typical work day and do you have a routine?
KM: It depends. I set my alarm for 6.30am with high hopes of working out. Generally, 7.30am though.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
KM: Press snooze.

Your day cannot be properly started without ______…
KM: Coffee and HuffPost.

How do you commute to work and do you enjoy your commute? Details please!
KM: I love my commute. I walk to work and stop for (more) coffee along the way and listen to music. My favorite mornings are when it’s sunny and crisp.

Does your day have a soundtrack? If so, what’s on your playlist that is a daily obsession or gives you that stroke of genius?
KM: It might sound trite, but I start my day listening to classical music. I find it helps to get the brain ticking.

Do you listen to podcasts? If so, which ones?
KM: Not really. I was obsessed with Serial and listened to all 12 episodes of the first season in one day. I haven’t found anything I’ve liked as much since.

Name your top five apps and why.
KM: 1) WhatsApp – being an expat.
2) Seamless – like most people who live in New York, I don’t use my kitchen much.
3) SoulCycle – I look at all the classes I might go to if something social doesn’t get in the way.
4) Hotels.com and Kayak (equally) – always planning the next weekend getaway.
5) NYTimes Crossword – you can use it without wifi so it’s good for train commutes.

What are some restaurants or spots near your office that make your day- from a lunch place that knows your ‘usual’ to a beautiful park- what locales do you live by?
KM: Belle Reve is always a winner. Sweetgreen when I feel like a walk.

What after-work activity makes your week complete?
KM: I like to make sure my team has had a good week. That always makes the week worthwhile. That, and a dirty martini.

A Day in the Life: Heikal Aliakber, MKTG NY

MKTG’s “A Day in the Life” series has spanned the US talking to our amazing colleagues. In this profile, we circle back to MKTG HQ in New York City and chat with native New Yorker Heikal Aliakber. Heikal works in Client Services on the R.J. Reynolds account, managing four mobile tours that conduct consumer engagement activity at music festivals, bars, clubs and retail locations. His days are full on- involving everything from working with major promoters to source/contract events, routing Brand Ambassadors to different locations based on strategic needs and managing on-site at client activations – from communications, creative ideation and sometimes rolling up his sleeves and hitting things with sledgehammers (seriously).

When back home in NYC, Heikel maneuvers his hometown with a nonplussed sense of know-how only true New Yorker’s can encompass – a skill that tourists must definitely gaze at with wonderment.

MKTG: What time do you wake up on a typical work day?
HA: This is highly dependent on where I’m waking up.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up? Do you have a routine?
HA: I’m the world’s worst morning person. Seriously. I could go to bed the following night, knowing that the next day will be the best day in recorded history, and I will still wake up and shake my fist in the air while yelling incoherently (like Grandpa Simpson). I feel like my brain doesn’t wake up until about 10AM, and that only happens if I do the following:
1) put food in my stomach prior to trying to actually get things done
2) shower (which may or may not serve as a platform for me to warm up my vocal cords so that I don’t grunt on the first few phone calls of the day
3) catch up on current events and anything that transpired over the period of time I was asleep. In our business, knowledge is power (but also, FOMO is real).

Your day cannot be properly started without ______…
HA: A huge bowl of oatmeal.

How do you commute to work, and do you enjoy your commute? Details please!
HA: I was born and raised in Queens, so dealing with NYC public transit isn’t anything new to me. I’m constantly traveling between Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island (where my fiancée currently lives), so suffice it to say, commuting is a major part of my life. Whether I enjoy it or not depends on the characters I meet. The dude who blasts relaxing string quartet music through a boombox on the Staten Island ferry, while doing his morning yoga routine? I’m cool with that. The dude that carries two live, noisy chickens in a puppy crate onto the E train at rush hour, while man-spreading against the pole that I’m trying to cling to? NOPE.

Does your day have a soundtrack? If so, what’s on your playlist that is a daily obsession or gives you that stroke of genius?
HA: My typical day oscillates between rap, reggae, international music, heavy metal, movie scores and slow jams. My current obsessions? “Amazing” – Spit Syndicate (Australian rap group), “Picture Perfect” – Culture Shock (hip hop/bhangra group), “No Leaf Clover” – Metallica, “Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst” – Kendrick Lamar, “Made You Look (Remix)” – Nas ft. Ludacris and “Time” – Hans Zimmer.

Do you listen to podcasts? If so, which ones?
HA: Anything NPR-related I find to be gold. But I also enjoy listening to The Joe Rogan Experience, and Anna Faris is Unqualified is charming.

Name your top five apps and why.
HA:
1) Venmo – because I’m always leaving my wallet somewhere
2) Delta – checking in early is a nervous tick of mine
3) Netflix – because I hate doing cardio, and watching new series “The Get Down” while slaving away on a
treadmill is the only thing getting me through it currently
4) Spotify – perfect for tuning out the chicken-carrying denizens of the NYC public transit system
5) News – to get my daily dose of what’s real in this world

What are some restaurants or spots near your office that make your day- from a lunch place that knows your ‘usual’ to a beautiful park- what locales do you live by?
HA: The fish tacos at Belle Reve are fantastic. But, I’m a Queens kid at heart, so most of the places I know aren’t local to the office, and are more often than not hole-in-the-wall establishments.

What after-work activity makes your week complete?
HA: I like picking heavy things up and putting them back down.

Canon Celebrates New Camera with Surprise Gallery Event at The Whitney

Reposted (and a bit revised) from our partner agency 360i’s blog. We were honored to help them fully produce this powerful experience. 

To launch the highly-anticipated EOS 5D Mark IV, Canon and 360i gave four photographers an impossible challenge: only 24 hours after receiving the camera, they would have to display the images they captured at a full-fledged pop-up exhibit, produced by MKTG, at the white hot Whitney Museum in New York City’s Meatpacking district.

Just hours before the event, neither Canon nor 360i nor MKTG knew what images provided by Roberto Valenzuela, Jendra Jarnagin, Alex Strohl and Sue Bryce would look like. But confident in the camera’s abilities, they welcomed 130 prominent members of the media, influencers and New York’s photography community to watch as they were unveiled for the first time around the gallery. As guests arrived, every frame in the gallery was still empty. Then, while the audience watched, the photos were printed with Canon printers and mounted on the walls of the gallery over the course of the evening.

With over 8.2 million impressions, the campaign and gallery event was a successful celebration of Canon’s passion for imaging, and confidence in their flagship camera.

TopSpin Charity Event

We can officially add another successful TopSpin Charity event into the books! Last night at the Metropolitan Pavilion, TopSpin and MKTG welcomed celebrities, industry executives and ping-pong champions to celebrate together and raise money for charity. TopSpin raises awareness and provides funds for exceptional nonprofits that provide educational opportunities for under-served youth.

Celebrity guests included; Chris McCullough of the Brooklyn Nets, John Wallace former NY Knicks player, Professional golfer Seema Sadekar and Olympic gold medalist and 3 time WNBA Champion, Swin Cash. This year’s sponsors included Effen Vodka, Cupcake, Anheuser Bush, NBA Cares and Coca Cola.

Last nights event was MKTG and TopSpin’s fifth collaboration for the annual event. Similarly in years past, restaurant vendors came and served sample bites of their best dishes while guests had the opportunity to peruse the silent auction, take photos against the step & repeat and of course play some ping-pong! There have even been some rumblings of this being “the best TopSpin event yet.” We’ll take it!

Nike+ NYC Color Run

Last night Nike+ NYC officially unveiled their new Thursday Night Football “Color Rush” jerseys for the Jets vs. Bills game. In the week leading up to the jersey unveil, Nike+ NYC hosted a series of “Color Rush” themed runs throughout the city. Last night Nike trainer Knox Robinson led a 4.5 mile run through the city which ended at Midtown bar Snaffu 28. Runners were greeted with food and drink and of course, a live streaming of the Jets vs. Bills game!

It’s not always lonely at the top.

E! News host Terrence J gathered 30 intimates on an NYC rooftop overlooking the Empire State Building for a special evening honoring former MTV VMA Lala Anthony on Thursday night. Anthony, star of 50 Cent’s Starz series “Power,” wrapped filming on Season 2 of the show two weeks ago.

For Lala and Terrence, the two have a long history together. In addition to co-starring in the “Think Like a Man” franchise and both gaining fame as hosts of live daily pop culture shows (Terrence on BET’s “106th and Park”, Lala as an MTV VJ on “TRL” and “Direct Effect”), Mrs. Carmelo Anthony would have you believe their bond goes back to the womb.

2015 Warby Parker Hackathon

What makes a successful Hackathon, you ask?

Had you asked me this a few weeks ago, I would have no idea. Frankly, I wasn’t completely confident in my definition of of a Hackathon. However, as an intern in the NY office of MKTG, I was able to work on my very first Hackathon, and it was awesome.

On July 18-19, MKTG INC produced a Hackathon for our client Warby Parker in partnership with the City of NY Office of Tech and Innovation at Civic Hall in the Flatiron District. The goal was to bring together 100 summer interns from companies in the area to spend a 24 hour period in lock down, solving a technology issue for three non-profits. Basically, a tech-for-good initiative.

As part of the core team, we worked for months for this to come off without a hitch. From venue selection to sponsorship procurement to donation outreach, collateral design, run-of-show, speaker training, intern recruitment, staffing and all the way through to production, it was a huge undertaking.

At kick off around 3pm on Saturday, July 18th, nearly 100 talented tech interns from the NYC area gathered for 24-hours to compete against each other for rewards that went far beyond bragging rights. Unlike my previous interpretation of a hackathon – cracking codes, breach firewalls – these interns used their tech skills and savvy to solve current issues faced by prominent NYC non-profits: Blue Ridge Labs, NYC Department of Homeless Services, and Donorschoose.org.

Although these interns were working tirelessly throughout the night, this isn’t to say they weren’t having fun, and they definitely weren’t going hungry. Participants could blow off steam by playing foosball or ping-pong, flying mini drones, and solving Rubik’s cubes, while consistent bouts of meals – a boatload (like hundreds and hundreds of tubs) of delicious Tribe Hummus of every variety, jars upon jars of candy, mountains of food, and of course #HudsonHack gear and toys kept them on their toes.

After hours of hard work, 24 to be exact, each team of 3-4 interns presented their final pitches to a panel of impressive judges including Minerva Tantoco, NYC’s Chief Technology Officer; Shelley Leibowitz, Board of Directors of E*TRADE and former CIO of Morgan Stanley and World Bank; and Alan Wade, Board of Trustees of The Aerospace Corporation and former CIO of the CIA.

The teams were judged on multiple aspects of their presented solutions, the most important factor being social innovation that solves an issue for the the greatest good. For example, one team developed an interactive map that showed where specific donations have the most impact, to an app that allows families to find safe educational events for their children during the summer break. In the end, the riseUP app won for incentivizing donations from diners and participating NYC restaurants to aid homeless shelters and kitchens in the area.

Overall, it was a ton of work but such an incredible experience.  And working with a brand like Warby Parker was so much fun. It’s an amazing company with a cool culture that I really enjoyed being part of. Thanks to MKTG for this great opportunity I always remember fondly. What a great summer this has been!

We have all heard daunting tales of pointless internships, where interns are relegated solely to making copies and getting coffee while constantly asking themselves “Is it 5 o’clock yet?” But in my six weeks as an intern at MKTG INC, I have yet to get anybody coffee; in fact, I’ve had full-time employees offering to get me coffee on their run downstairs. We even have a “coffee talk” program, where each intern is given a Starbucks card (being the broke college student that I am, this is huge), as well as the opportunity to invite any employee in the company to coffee for a chat. Even though I am an intern in the Sales and Marketing department, I have had the chance to sit down with Tim Owens, VP, Production to pick his brain about another part of the industry that piques my interest.

If you ask any of the 12 MKTG summer interns in NY, Chicago, Atlanta and San Francisco about their typical day, the answers would be universal: there’s no such thing as a typical day.

We are in and out of the office, attending meetings and events, performing research, and even getting our hands dirty in the event production aspect of the industry. However, this isn’t to say we haven’t done our share of invoices and expense reports.

Many of the eight New York interns have spent recent weeks working on the Warby Parker Hackathon, a project MKTG INC is producing pro-bono in partnership with Warby Parker and the City of New York.

The Warby Parker Hackathon, called #HudsonHack, will host over 200 tech interns in New York City, and students will compete for 24 hours to come up with innovative solutions for several local nonprofit organizations. Our MKTG interns have been working in-and-out of their usual departments to help put on this event. Intern Stasean has been with the project since the brainstorming phase, working alongside the Strategy & Planning team to come up with ideas for sponsorships and activations within the event. The opportunity to meet so many members of the Warby Parker team and regularly visit their offices has allowed our interns to “really build a connection with the brand,” says Stasean. Meanwhile creative intern Lauren has had weekly trips to WP HQ to work with their design team. Julia and I have also tagged along, developing the event’s social media plan, recruiting intern participants, and helping with sponsorship outreach.

MKTG’s remaining summer interns have also worked on Diageo projects such as Chrissy’s work on Smirnoff’s NYC Pride Parade activation, and Julia and Melissa’s slew of Nike summer training events, even previewing not-yet-public classes and interacting with Nike trainers and clients.
