MKTG and Diageo made a splash at the 16th annual Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans (July 19-24, 2016). TOTC is the world’s premier cocktail festival for both industry and consumers, sponsoring a series of seminars, tasting rooms, spirited dinners and volunteer events with the Bon Vivants (San Francisco-based & nationally recognized cocktail, hospitality, marketing and design firm). Immersive experiences allowed attendees to experience innovative Canadian-themed cocktails by Crown Royal, rejuvenate in the morning at the Tanqueray Gin & Juice bar, taste rare malts from the scotch portfolio- brought together by some of the greatest bartenders in the world at the World Class Family Reunion dinner and let loose at the #DiageoGames portfolio party.

Some highlights included:

Ode to the Bowl: Tequila Don Julio, Zacapa Rum, Ketel One Vodka and Bulleit Bourbon sponsored the unofficial kick-off to Tales of the Cocktail at the world-famous Rock’n’Bowl lanes, in a partnership with the Spare Room in Los Angeles. Teams from around the globe competed for the Punch Bowl prize, with Team London bringing home the gold!

World Class Family Reunion: After five years of touring the country and looking for the best bartenders, Diageo’s World Class program hosted a dinner to reunite past competitors and reminisce about the challenges and triumphs of the past five years.

#DiageoGames Portfolio Party: Diageo showcased 14 of its brands at the Diageo Games, arguably one of the most talked-about events at Tales of the Cocktail this year. Each brand represented a country, and activities that consumers could participate in included volleyball, badminton, speed-walking and foosball.

A buzz was building throughout the week with the “Follow the Torch” campaign and hashtag.  Bartender Sean Kenyon and a group of 15 bartenders began the journey with the torch in Denver, CO, riding their motorcycles to New Orleans, and the journey was completed throughout the week of Tales of the Cocktail in the French Quarter by bartenders on a custom, branded pedicab with inflatable torches. Each leg of the run was shared on social media, and generated more than 53,000 likes and views.

Tasting Room- A Spirited Celebration of the Americas: Lauren Mote (2015 Canadian World Class Champion and co-founder of Bittered Sling Bitters) partnered with Diageo’s Reserve Brands to execute this tasting room to take guests on a tour from Western Canada to the Southern United States, mid-Mexico through to Central America, with a quick bounce to the Patagonian region of South America, all told through the story of cocktails.

Guests enjoyed the following cocktails, brought to life in posters and recipe postcards designed by New Orleans-based artist Phillip Collier:

Neerlandia: Ketel One Vodka, Caesar Mix & Bittered Sling Gastown Bitters

Freemasonry Fizz: A breakfast-inspired Ramos gin fizz featuring Tanqueray No. TEN with local organic eggs & Fruit Loop cereal garnish

Anacafé: Zacapa Rum 23 paired with fresh espresso, yellow Chartreuse & Giffard Banane

Century Plant: Tequila Don Julio Blanco, Mezcal, Aloe Vera Juice, Ginger, Lime & Gose beer

with one comment

PDXCW15_Major_Lounge_Zacapa-029

Zacapa’s global Brand Ambassador, Rebecca Quiñonez, hosted the Zacapa Rum Art of Slow Lounge at Portland Cocktail Week, as part of the Diageo World Class activation. Students at Portland Cocktail Week were able to access the Lounge space in-between classes, and there were four activation spaces set up in the same room by a variety of brands. Zacapa Rum transformed the Diageo space into the Art of Slow Lounge, allowing students to:

RELAX: with 5-10 minute chair massages, provided by massage therapists from the East West College of the Healing Arts (55 massages were executed in total)

REFUEL: Portland Roasting Coffee set up complimentary hot and cold brew coffee service, and whole beans were gifted to students in half-pound branded coffee bags

INDULGE: Macaroons were brought in from Farina Bakery

DISCOVER: World Class champion bartenders Charles Joly and Tyson Buhler served Zacapa Rum’s Guatemalan Coffee Cooler and signature Old Fashioned cocktails, along with Zacapa Rum National Trade Executor Lynette Marrero. Guests had the opportunity to meet our start bartenders, and learn about both Zacapa Rum and Diageo World Class

Follow our journey as we continue to recap Portland Cocktail Week highlighting other Diageo brands we worked with this year! Stay tuned!

Introducing World Class Training Labs

with 2 comments

MKTG is proud to be a part of this year’s World Class Training Labs. World Class Labs serve as both workshop and playground where bartenders explore the industry’s most relevant topics and practice new skills, all with the guidance of bartending luminaries. The Labs’ purpose is to honor, elevate and extend the craft of bartending, and the passion for it, throughout the industry. The Labs provide a platform for our Reserve brands to participate and provide “Best in Class” Training to the trade community.

A one day, 3 session, skills and brand training event leverages existing brand training content such as Tanqueray “classics and Ketel One “Food Pairing.”  Each training lab features World Class talent from either US, Global Markets, or Experts who also run seminars on relevant topics such as the Art of Presentation. Attendance at any of the World Class Training Labs satisfies the learning requirement for entering the World Class competition.

During the brand sessions, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about some of the world’s most premium liquors. While learning about Don Julio, Ambassador and participants will travel to a local farm where a local farmer will lead a seminar on fresh ingredients. Ketel One participants will enjoy a hands on food pairing training session while Zacapa Rum participants will sit in on The Art of Show – Unlocking Flavor brand education.

The World Class Training Lab program began in early September and will continue through early February in several US Markets. Take a look below at photos from previous markets and stay tuned to MKTG’s social channels for photo updates as the program continues!

Zacapa Hits the Links

without comments

While the weather is certainly frightful in many parts of the USA, many of us still can’t stop dreaming of the sun, sand, and… grass? Golfers may need to travel a bit further than normal during the winter months to keep their game strong, but MKTG INC and Zacapa Rum were able to join some of them as they practiced their craft in sunny Arizona in December.

From December 3-5, 225 players from Troon Privé clubs nationwide came together at the Gallery Golf Club in Marana, AZ, to compete for the coveted title of Troon Cup champion. Against a dramatic backdrop of sandy deserts, blue skies and Saguaro cacti, Zacapa Rum was on hand from beginning to end, with tastings, cocktails and on-course sampling courtesy of our staff and talented National Brand Ambassador Robert Pallone.

So what’s a great cocktail to try when you’re out on the green? We suggest:

The Zacapa 23 Ginger
1.5 oz Zacapa 23 Rum
4 dashes Angostura bitters
5 mint leaves
Half of a fresh squeezed lemon
.75 oz Demerera simple syrup (or regular simple syrup)
Fever Tree Ginger Beer

Stir rum, mint, lemon, and simple syrup together. Pour over ice, add 4 dashes of bitters and top with Ginger Beer. Enjoy!
